Weekend Thoughts

This weekend was full of College Basketball for me and i must say it didn't disappoint. It all started with the NCAA Division II championship game which i attended. I believe it was the best game of the day hands down. The game featured the Winona st. Warriors vs. the Augusta st. Jaquars, Winona st has been in the final game the last three years and game into this one huge favorites. May i just say the Winona st fans sure do travel well... There had to be at least 1500 Winona fans in Springfield Mass. and the team is out of Minnesota. They started the game making sure to give the fans a show after traveling so far going 5-5 to start the game but that really was the highlight of the first half because they went cold from the field following that and ended up trailing Augusta by 12 at half time due to a dominating performance by senior forward 'AJ' Bowman (9-11 for 20pts). You just knew that Winona st was going to come out of the gate in the second half on fire after recieving what i can only imagine as one firery halftime speech, but it didnt happen that way the lead shot up to 16 after 3 minutes but then Junior forward Jonte Flowers took over the game scoring 25 of his game high 30 in the second half. Winona st then went on to outscore Augusta by 27 the rest of the game to capture its 2nd championship in 3 years. The last two years this game has not disappointed I believe they should televise the elite 8 not just the final game because i heard that all the games were close.

The other games i just watched from either a bar or the comfort of my own house but i didn't consider them to be very interesting I never thought Xavier stood a chance against UCLA and Louisville although they had it tied with like 6 minutes left to go i still didn't feel that UNC was going to lose. That may just be my bias towards UNC but i just had a feeling that some1 would step up and close out the cardinals and Pyscho T was up to the challenge. Anyone still think that he isn't the National Player of the Year????????

The second day of games we're better Memphis Vs. Texas and Davidson vs Kansas. I needed Texas to win the first game to have any chance at winning with my bracket but that didn't happen so i proceeded to root for Davidson to pull off the upset against Kansas and it looked like it might happen when with about 7 secounds left Curry had the ball and it seemed as if he was going to add on to his legend. Instead he passed it up and Kansas won by 2. At least Curry got a consolation prize of winning the Regions M.O.P. and i read that he has decided to stay in school for his junior year which will just start up the debate about whether or not Davidson can repeat the same run next year.

So another year where i can throw my bracket away before the final four but hey at least i can now just sit back and watch UNC win it all.

Walk Off!

Opening day started the same way the last 2 seasons have ended for Brave fans... with a crushing blow to the Ego to the team of the 90's. I do not see this first game as reason for concern but i am worried that Hudson is in for the same type of season he had last year where he can keep a team to 1 or 2 runs and still lose or get a no decision. Tim should be a 20 game winner easily each year and showed that after the first inning in which it was his error and a timely broken bat double that allowed the Nats to feel confident the rest of the game. It did look like the game was going to turn in the favor of the Braves when Lo Duca allowed a passed ball and the Braves tied it up in the bottom of the 9th. This hope was short lived though seeing as the next half inning with 2 out and no1 on Zim hit a walk-off home run to deflate the hopes of the Braves to ruin the opening on the new stadium. Instead it played out with a story book ending the new face of the franchise ( and the only player on the Nationals i like) hits the walk off and will forever be remembered.

I still like the Braves this year to win the East but it looks like the teams that once were considered jokes will no longer lay down for the teams ahead of them in prestige. This whole debacule would have been avoided had it been later in the year b/c with a healthy bullpen for the Braves you would have been looking at either Gonzalez or Soriano in that position and well with one of them on the mound i'd be bold enough to predict extra innings. If the Braves can keep up there in the standings until mid way through the season i see them competing without a problem.

Now that the true opening has come and gone i can only hope that the rest of the season will be as entertaining as the first day.

Weekend Thoughts

This weekend was a very important weekend in the NCAA some teams punched their tickets for March Madness while others just expanded the bubble and now their fate resides in the hands of the committee. The same committee that over the years have screwed up really bad with who they put in and who they leave out. Look at last year 'Cuse wins 20 and gets left out then goes on the hand everyone in the NIT a nice beat down. This years team that scares me a little bit is VCU they were the best team in their conference by far and now they must rely on the committee to put them in. VCU was the darling team last year and if they make it in look for them to do the same thing this year because of the chip that will be on their shoulder.

UCLA walked away with another game that they should have lost but the refs helped them out again. Its nice to see that rules dont matter when it comes to UCLA. That ball clearly goes over the backboard and the rule was being talked about on every program later on... the ball is out of bounds which mean that game is over and Cal gets the win, instead UCLA gets back to back games handed to them by the refs... Does any other team have a chance in the Pac-10? I just hope that games they play in during the Tournament are better officiated then the last 2 have been because i do not wish to see UCLA make the final four by default.

Duke - UNC was everything it was billed to be and more. UNC seemed like they were going to run away with it come halftime and then Duke came out firing threes which i believe is the reason they are never out of a game. With that said i think UNC showed alot of people they are for real when they held Duke scoreless for the last 5 minutes of the game. Its that kind of defense is what will win them the title.. other teams like Kansas can put up the same scoring output as UNC so they will need to stop some1. on another note about the game it was nice to see Duke fans paying respect to Eve Marie Carson during the moment of silience... And will some1 please get rid of the Speedo man.

The Suns finally looked like the team they wished to be when they traded for Shaq. They beat the Spurs which is the main reason for the pick up so hopefully they can get the 7th seed in the playoffs because i dont know if they can beat any other team with Shaq. Although he did show some spirit going into the stands for that loose ball. it seems as if they can somewhat play defense when they need to which should scare some teams bu tthey are way too inconsistent with Shaq to win a 7 game series.

Other sporting events that made me wonder this weekend were Andy Roddick winning, Kyle Busch winning, Lakers losing, and the Drake Bulldogs.

  • Roddick looks like he may be on his way to having one of his best seasons. he has only dropped 2 matches this year and has taken down 6 players in the top 30 this year. If he can keep on this roll i see him making a run at one of the 2 final Grand slams. You can write him off for the French hes never made it past the 3rd round there.
  • Kyle Busch is showing that this year he is the real deal and Hendricks made a mistake by getting rid of him. He is sitting in 1st in the truck series, 3rd in the nationwide and 1st in the Sprint cup series. I see him as becoming the first racer to ever finish the season as the top driver in each of the series. He looks like hes the real deal now if he stays away from becoming like his brother he'll be just fine.
  • The Lakers are having a very hard time with the Kings this year and i know those 2 teams usually play very good games but the talent level this year is much wider and yet the Kings stay in every game vs them. A week ago the Kings took a huge lead into the 4th quarter just to blow it and allow the lakers to win but this weekend they held onto the lead and Kobe missed a game winner with under 2 seconds left giving the Kings a win vs the top team in the West. Lakers better not have let downs like this against good teams in the playoffs or else they will be out first round.
  • Drake looks good for a bunch of walk-ons and cast offs. They were picked by the coaches to finish 9th in their conference and all they did was break into the top 20 nationally ranked teams and win their confrence very easily. They are in the same mold as Duke and are never out of a game with their three point shooters. Kyle Korver's little brother will end up playing a huge part come the tournament. look for Drake to make a run into at least the Sweet Sixteen.

Hopefully the next few weeks are just as entertaining as this weekend was for sports.

ALL BALL!

Thursday night always a fun night... the bar and sports. Every Thursday night im out with my friends having a good time shooting some pool, playing some cards and watching just about every sporting event that is on in our area. last night we had alot of games that surprised us.. Xavier losing to St. Joes, the Rockets continuing their roll, and the STANFORD CARDINALS getting the short end of the stick.

Xavier losing a game almost seemed inevitable but there was that slim chance that they would win out and slip into a 2 seed for the tournament. All those dreams went out the window last night with that loss now they might get lucky and pull a 4 seed.

The Rockets are still surprising me with how good they are playing without Yao. Granted last nights game was against a Dirk-less Mavs who haven't even been clicking when Dirk was in the lineup, but i still didn't think the Rockets would win by nearly 20 again. This team seems to be coming together under the common idea that everyone wrote them off including me and now i must say it looks like they could be the surprise of the Playoffs.

Hill got ALL BALL in his block against Collison with 2.4 seconds left in the Stanford - UCLA game. It looks like Collison got what would be called a "superstar" call in the NBA. Collison went onto hit both free throws and then the Bruins destroyed Stanford in overtime. UCLA with the win clinched the Pac 10 and now Stanford should get one more chance at UCLA in the Pac 10 tournament barring any upsets, and my money will be on Stanford and the twin towers.

Other news and notes from yesterday got me thinking as well. Can Jevon "The Freak" Kearse return to his freakish ways now that the Titans re-signed him. With the Bailey brothers on the same team how good will the Broncos defense be, I think Boss Bailey will be one of the best LBs in the league this year. Im not big on the whole idea of rookie contracts in baseball, Papelbon making 775k, Fielder making 415k, Francoeur making 450k and Howard last year making 900k after winning the NL MVP. They have to fix this whole idea because these are top notch players on their respective teams and yet they are making much less then players who arent contributing as much. I know in many of the cases its because teams cant agree to terms but it seems as if these players when they become eligible for abritration are going to take their teams to the cleaners. It seems to me like the rookie contracts should be prorated some how so these types of players who are contributing to their teams could make more over the first couple of years if them and the team can't agree on a long-term deal.
